The Alexandrinsky Theatre is one of the oldest national theatres in Russia. From the very beginning of its existence this Theatre became one of the empire theatres and the cradle of the dramatic art. Second name -The Russian State Pushkin Academy DramaTheatre. The troupe of the Theatre was created by the order of empress Elizabeth on August 30, 1756, exactly this date is considered to be the birthday of Russian national theatre. In 1832 the Theatre was named in honor of Nicolas I’s wife Alexandra Feodorovna. In 2005 the theatre was closed to the reconstruction and was opened on a date of celebration the 250 anniversary of the theatre, on August 30, 2006. The Theatre returned its historical look and was improved in technical point. In 2012 while celebration the 180 anniversary of the Theatre building, the Theatre educational complex “The New stage of Alexandrinsky theatre” was inaugurated.

Nice yellow classical building was created by outstanding Italian architect Carlos Rossi. Being the Empire theatre it was created monumental and luxury like usual, decorated with columns and a bronze sculpture on the top. Rossi chose the Empire stile, using his favorite colors: yellow and white. Inside you’ll see a lot of red velvet, molding and a wonderful curtain that covers the stage. The Theatre is famous for its corridors and numerous stairs, so be careful not to be lost in them.
Apart from famous Russian dramatic place like “Uncle Vanya”, “The Seagul” by Chekhov, “A Sunstroke” by Bunin, “The Reviser”, “Marriage” by Gogol, you can enjoy the festival plays of foreign authors: a choreography play “Snow White”, “Macbeth”, “The Marriage of Figaro”, “War and Peace”, etc. From 2005 V.V. Fokin is the director of the Theatre, the laureate of four Russian state awards and the president of the Meyerhold cultural theatre center. Visiting the Alexandrinsky Theatre you need to follow the dress code, black tie for men and evening dresses for women are not really the must, but you’d better keep formal style. During the cold season(autumn, winter, early spring) remember about a possible snow and rain outside, that’s why don’t forget to take shoes to change and to leave your coat and hat in the cloakroom. The Theatre is situated in the middle of the Nevsky prospect at Ostrovskogo Square, one of the nicest squares in Saint Petersburg, 3 minutes walk from Nevsky prospect. It’s very easy to get there by walking along the beautiful streets of Saint Petersburg, by underground (station Nevsky prospect- Gostiny dvor) or by taxi if your hotel is situated far away from the city center. In June during the marvelous White Nights our city gladly opens its doors for a lot of festivals. Every year the Theatre organize a special festival that is called “Aleksandrinsky” this year it take place in September - October, so people have an opportunity to see a lot of modern plays of Russian and foreign masters. Generally the time May-July is considered the most romantic and nice time for visiting theatres because apart from the precious performance you can enjoy wonderful White Nights of Saint Petersburg!
